Super Immunity for Superior Health

Holistic Best Practices for a Strong Immune System

By Russell Louie - March 2, 2020

In the…
  • 1990's, we had the Bird flu (H5N1) virus.
  • 2003, we had the SARS-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV).
  • 2009, came the influenza A (H1N1pdm09) virus pandemic.
  • Now in 2020, we have the novel coronavirus (COVID-19 or 2019-nCoV).
Viruses have the ability to mutate and evolve like all living things. That is why last year's flu vaccine is not good this year. Bacteria also evolve, which is why we see antibiotic-resistance strains. Some of our personal holistic immune choices are the following:

Vitamin D— our osteopathic physician recommended 5,000 IU of Vitamin D daily for good immune system function because we live at high altitude (Denver) and do not get outside much in the wintertime.

Elderberry syrup— from the ancient Egyptians, to European folk medicine and Native American culture, black elderberries have long been used to treat infections and support good immune function.

Gan Mao Ling (Chinese patent herbs)— can be used proactively or at first onset of cold or flu symptoms. There are more Chinese patent formulas for specific flu symptoms (such as throat or stomach symptoms).

Oscillococcinum (from BOIRON)— we take this at the first sign of the flu. As a homeopathic remedy, it contains no strong active ingredients, is non-drowsy and has no known interactions with drugs or supplements. It also will not mask symptoms that may develop from a more serious condition. Safe for everyone ages 2 and up.

Kick-Ass Immune ACTIVATOR (from WishGarden Herbs)— Margaret's doctor recommended this collection of immune-boosting herbs for the body's immune, respiratory, and lymphatic systems to support the body's natural resistance.

Essential oils— essential oils from plants are too complex for viruses and bacteria to adapt to. There are many, many essential oil blends for specific types of flu and infections.

While we understand the need to supplement the symptoms for an acute viral infection, we also advocate nutritionally supporting the body's own natural ability to heal BEFORE symptoms show up or blow up (viral outbreak). As an analogy, while installing new granite counter tops in the kitchen and rug in the living room may make the house look better, a better investment would be first fixing the leaking pipe in the kitchen or crack in the basement foundation that lets water in every time it rains. Whole food nutrition, rather than the above isolated supplements, is the foundation of good "wholistic" health. In addition to the above suggestions, we holistically recommend the following for a good immune system foundation:
  1. Avoid processed and pre-packaged foods with white flour, white sugar, soy and GMO ingredients that can deplete the nutrition needed for a healthy immune system.
  2. Avoid any soda pop (regular or diet). Too much sugar and phosphoric acid imbalances the body's pH making it too acidic, another immune compromising action.
  3. Buy organically grown foods. Factory-farmed foods from a mass market grocery store are generally nutrient deficient. Margaret did a research study comparing the mineral content of foods today to 70 years ago. The depletion ranged from 10-76%. You can read the full results at: "Lack of minerals leads to lack of health."
So where can one get the immune supporting nutrients missing in our modern diet? Nature's own superfood, algae. Here is an impressive short list of nutrients in our bio-algae concentrate products (BioSuperfood for people and BioPreparation for pets) that research shows may help support the body's response to any viral, bacterial, fungal or parasitic infection:

Chlorophyll's energy to purify, renew and anti-inflammatory properties may support immune-enhancing and antiviral qualities.
  1. Nucleic acids, found in RNA and DNA, is responsible for directing cellular renewal, growth, and repair. This may strengthen immunity by improving the activity of T- and B-cells, which defend against viruses and other invading microorganisms, and macrophages, which destroy cancer and cellular debris in general.
  2. Phycocyanin (protein pigment in blue-green algae) may inhibit virus replication and intensify the cellular and hormonal mechanism of the immune system, reducing the presence of viral diseases. Chinese scientists documented that phycocyanin stimulates hematopoesis (creation of blood), emulating the hormone erythropoetin (EPO). EPO is produced by healthy kidneys and regulates bone marrow stem cell production of red blood cells. They claim phycocyanin regulated white blood cell production, even when bone marrow stem cells are damaged by toxic chemicals or radiation.
  3. Abundant antioxidants, such as astaxanthin, beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, lutein, lycopene, xeaxanthin, quercitin, b-cryptoxanthin and many other pigments that offer powerful immunity and toxin shield against continuous pollution, toxins and stress.
  4. Hoemattoccocus is the highest source on earth of astaxanthin, a red pigment which is clinically proven to have hundreds of times more antioxidant power than vitamin E and vitamin C, and dozen of times more than that of beta carotene as found in carrots.
  5. Astaxanthin is 40 times more effective as an antioxidant than beta-carotene, 500 to 1000 times more effective in inhibiting lipid peroxidation as an antioxidant than Vitamin E, has greater anti-inflammatory capability than Vitamin E.
  6. GLA (gamma-linoleic acid), also found in early mother's milk, is used as brain-building fats and to stimulate an infant's own natural immune system.
For more nutritional details and successful testimonials, go to our Health Conditions webpage, Viral, Bacterial, Fungal and Infections or ask us for our bio-algae concentrates (BAC) holistic research paper, Viruses, Bacteria, Fungus, Parasites and Candida. If you think our whole superfood products are not "strong" enough for today’s viral pandemic, check you our previous blog, October, 2014 Update: Ebola and HIV Update. It reveals a National Cancer Institute's study on how Anti-HIV Protein from Blue-Green Algae Also Inhibits Ebola Infection.

While not scientific proof, are you going to wait for conclusive scientific proof with FDA-approved double-blind placebo studies before you take holistic preventative action? The reason why this old knowledge (Anti-HIV study results published in 2003) is not more widespread is that pharmaceutical and supplement companies cannot patent the rights to using blue-green algae as a viral remedy without coming up with a proprietary method for extracting or concentrating the active ingredients and proving theirs is better than Nature using FDA-approved, double-blind placebo studies. If I can take or give our family a whole superfood product that does not have side effects, is produced under good quality controls and is relatively inexpensive when compared to drugs, I will take these holistic measures for a super immune system.

Here is a how Dr. Roland Thomas' family benefited from taking holistic preventative action. Dr. Thomas' daughter was living in a college dormitory. Everyone on her floor got (or tested positive for) the H1N1 virus except her. Of course, his daughter had been taking the whole superfood product, BioSuperfood-f3, for many years already. Is this scientific proof of viral prevention? You be the judge as to what is good for balancing your body.

If you get at least one cold/flu each season, try something different to provide a healthier outcome. For true "wholistic" wellness, be holistically proactive (before symptoms show up or blow up), rather than medically reactive (to symptoms). Since you know your immune system gets depleted every winter, start in the fall by doing some of the proactive holistic measures above at a daily maintenance amount. At the first sign of a cold or flu symptoms, ramp up what you are doing to a therapeutic level, plus add several flu-targeted isolated supplements. Remember, throughout the entire flu season to drink plenty of fluids, get adequate rest, eat fresh fruits and vegetables and take BioSuperfood-f3 to give your body the fuel it needs for a super optimum immune system.

Healthy Heart - February Is American Heat Month

Healthy Heart - February Is American Heat Month
Being over 65, Russell continues to have regular Lipid Panels run to check his cholesterol. His total cholesterol (reference level 100-199) has been in a downward trend ever since 2015:
  1. 2015 = 194 mg/dL
  2. 2018 = 189 mg/dL
  3. 2019 = 178 mg/dL
His bad cholesterol (LDL, reference level 0-99) went down:
  1. 2015 = 134 mg/dL
  2. 2018 = 122 mg/dL
  3. 2019 = 113 mg/dL
His good cholesterol (HDL, reference level >39) actually went down too:
  1. 2015 = 46 mg/dL
  2. 2018 = 38 mg/dL
  3. 2019 = 36 mg/dL
He attributes his relatively good numbers for a senior to the following:
  1. Oriental heritage
  2. Eating a holistic diet ever since he was born (65+ years ago)
  3. Eating a gluten-free, dairy-free (cow and goat milk), soy-free and GMO-free diet
  4. Eating mostly grass-fed meats and wild caught seafood (non-farm raised)
  5. Eating very little processed foods
  6. Eating no fast-foods and limited eating at restaurants
  7. Eliminating chocolate (yes, even dark chocolate)
  8. Cooking at home from scratch
  9. Walking 5-7 days per week
  10. Taking the revolutionary whole superfood product, BioSuperfood-f3, since 2002
His numbers in 2018 were measured by his HMO medical doctor (M.D.). According to the HMO's calculation, he has a 10.2% cardiovascular risk, with anything over 10% considered high. His HMO M.D. recommended a statin medication, following the Mediterranean diet (eating more fruit, vegetables, low-fat protein, nuts), avoiding processed foods and exercising 5-6 times per week for at least 30 minutes a day. The side effects from statin drugs are well documented:
  1. Rash
  2. Nausea or vomiting
  3. Abdominal cramps, gas, bloating
  4. Diarrhea or constipation
  5. Liver damage
  6. Increase in blood sugar potentially leading to Type 2 diabetes
  7. Headache
  8. Difficulty sleeping
  9. Muscle pain, aches, weakness and damage
  10. Neurological side effects including memory loss and confusion
With the exception of eating more fruits and vegetables, he already follows the basic Mediterranean diet with little processed foods. He already goes for a 30 minute, one mile walk 5-6 days per week, as part of his mTBI (mild Traumatic Brain Injury) recovery program. Considering he already has symptoms 7-10 above, as he continue to recover from a concussion (mTBI), he decided against taking statin medications and sought another opinion from his osteopathic physician (D.O.) for a statin drug alternative.

His D.O. mentioned taking an herbal bergamot product to lower his bad cholesterol but she suggested making subtle and incremental life-style changes first. She said to improve bad cholesterol values, dietary changes seem to work the best. But to improve good cholesterol values, making lifestyle exercise changes seemed to work the best. So, in 2018 he cleaned up his diet by eliminating goat milk products, chocolate, cookies and brownies at night for dessert. These sweets were treating the depression from his mTBI. Instead, he substituted our Hemp Oil to reduce his stress levels and improve his moods. He was more diligent about going for his one mile afternoon walk 6-7 days per week. He added 10 minutes on the Nordic Track, whenever he could not do his afternoon walk. His total cholesterol in 2019 went down 11 points and his bad cholesterol went down 2 points with these incremental changes in lifestyle without taking any new pills.
If you want to have a healthy heart, do not just rely on a pill. To avoid the side effects of statin drugs, try improving your diet, increasing your exercise and adding our whole superfood, bio-algae concentrates product, BioSuperfood-f3, to your diet. BioSuperfood is NOT an isolated supplement or a cholesterol-lowering pill. Instead, BioSuperfood is a food, like an orange and salmon, with over 15,000 individual nutrients. I attribute the ability to continue my downward cholesterol trend to eating BioSuperfood-f3 for the past 17 years. The advanced Forte formula, BioSuperfood-f3, has the most antioxidants and is 5 times more efficient at balancing the body over the general nutrition Core formula, BioSuperfood-f2, but not 5 times the price. The antioxidants are super nutrients that nourish and balance ALL the glands in the brain. When the glands are balanced and working in synergy, one has fewer cravings for food, especially inappropriate foods such as white sugar, excess carbohydrates (white flour) and alcohol. One's moods are more balanced and one can handle stress better (less depression). When the body is less stressed it can rest, digest, repair and regenerate better, thus your body will digest food more efficiently, not accumulate the bad fats and cholesterol in your veins/arteries and manufacture more good cholesterol. To discover how BioSuperfood-f3 may nutritionally help your heart, blood pressure and cholesterol values, download the three holistic bio-algae concentrates (BAC) research papers below.

Supplement Discontinued: Symptoms Return

Russell Louie

Supplement Discontinued: Symptoms Return
Back in the 18th century, European travelers were crossing the Atlantic Ocean to the New World. They discovered if they drank fresh lime juice they did not get scurvy (a vitamin C deficiency resulting in weakness and joint pain, internal hemorrhages causing black-and-blue marks to appear on the skin, gums hemorrhaging and becoming weak and spongy, teeth root break down where teeth loosen and eating becomes difficult and painful). That's why British sailors were called limeys. It was not until the 20th century, that scientists finally isolated the beneficial nutrient in citrus fruits as vitamin C. What is not commonly known is by taking isolated Vitamin C in the form of an ascorbic acid supplement one only gets rid of the symptoms of scurvy. When the ascorbic acid supplement is discontinued the symptoms and disease returns. However, if one gets Vitamin C made from an extract of whole green peppers not only do the symptoms disappear but the scurvy is gone when discontinued. Vitamin C in the form of a whole food product contains rutin, bioflavonoids, Vitamin E, selenium and zinc that Nature dictated is needed for Vitamin C to work optimally in our body. All these complementary compounds are present in whole food sources of Vitamin C (e.g., green peppers, oranges, rose hips, acerola cherries, algae). By eating only an isolated supplement with just ascorbic acid or by juicing an orange and throwing away the pulp and peel, one is missing all the above necessary compounds.  I have demonstrated this to myself by taking a megadose 2,000 mg Vitamin C tablet and a whole food supplement Vitamin C produced from rose hips and acerola fruits (vitamin C=250 mg) to my chiropractor when I had the flu. Through wholesome testing the chiropractor decided the 2,000 mg supplement would help me recuperation from the chilly or influenza yet the 250 mg entire sustenance tablet would improve.

Consider this fact: more expensive Vitamin C supplements are buffered to prevent nausea for those with a sensitive stomach (can’t tolerate ascorbic acid). Nature included the buffer ingredients needed in the pulp and skin of whole food sources of Vitamin C (i.e. the white pulpy part of the orange). So, who is smarter—the scientist that discovered we need to put back the buffer ingredients in isolated Vitamin C supplements or Nature? New research has shown that 90% of the antioxidant power of whole foods is contained in the pulp and peel. So, why do most super nutrient, antioxidant juices on the market today contain only the juice?

Whole food products contain all the complementary ingredients that Nature said are needed to achieve optimal health benefits. Green peppers and oranges naturally contain bioflavonoids, rutin, Vitamin E, selenium, zinc and a host of other nutrients that scientists today know are needed for Vitamin C to work efficiently in our bodies.

When taking an isolated supplement the body has to assemble the proper enzymes, amino acids, buffer ingredients and other complementary minerals and substances Nature said are needed for the supplement to work properly. Sometimes the body even 'robs' other areas of the body of these vital ingredients. When taking a whole food product, all the proper enzymes, amino acids, minerals and other complementary ingredients and nutrients Nature said are needed, the body gets right to work. BioSuperfood and BioPreparation only contain Nature's food in the form of one cell algae and nothing man-made, extracted or chemically altered. The body instinctually knows what to do with algae and gets right to work balancing and healing the body holistically from within. Algae is native to all people's and animal's diet.

Whole Food Products vs Vitamins and Supplements

Russell Louie

Whole Food Products vs Vitamins and Supplements
Taking vitamin and mineral supplements is generally considered to be a “healthy” addition to our diet. However, in past centuries, people were able to stay healthy without supplements because they generally ate a healthier diet than we do today and their traditional wisdom told them to eat superfoods naturally rich in essential vitamins and minerals required for health. They were, therefore, less prone to the degenerative diseases of today (for example, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and cancer) without taking natural or "holistic" supplements. In the past, foods were grown on small farms in mineral-rich soils. Today, foods are grown in mineral-deficient soils on “factory farms” where the main goal is to produce high quantity rather than high quality food. In addition to this, with the advent of our fast paced lifestyle, fast-food diet and highly processed foods prevalent today, we no longer get the basic nutrition needed to stay well. Modern technology has improved so much that we can now isolate the vitamins and minerals our modern day diet is missing that are required for health. But is this sufficient to promote optimum health and is this an improvement on what our ancestors ate?

Taking supplements is like sitting in the audience of a concert and trying to direct how to make the orchestra sound better. One could test (doctor) the trumpet players and decide they were not good enough and hire more talented musicians. One could conclude (chiropractor or other healthcare provider) the woodwind section needs help and bring in a better first clarinet player. Or one could guess (patient) the percussion section was not even needed for this piece of music and disband them altogether. But all of these choices are being made outside of the orchestra based on external criteria which may or may not be valid. It would be much better to get the conductor to decide how to make the orchestra play and sound better. The conductor is an integral part of the orchestra, they would know all the strengths and weaknesses of each player, they would know how to nurture each musician to extract their maximum talents and abilities. Instead of asking a doctor, chiropractor, other healthcare professional and even yourself what the body needs, why not provide all the super nutrition the body needs and let the brain (conductor) decide how much it needs and where to direct the super nutrition to where it is needed the most? Rather than direct an external fix from outside the body, why not activate the natural ability of the body to heal itself? We just need to provide the fuel (vitamins, minerals, enzymes, Omega oils), tools (antioxidants and super nutrition for the brain) and then energize, awaken and balance the glands in the brain (conductor) to do the healing.

Fallacy of Minimum Daily Requirement

Russell Louie

Fallacy of Minimum Daily Requirement
Most supplement studies are done using isolated (sometimes synthetic) sources of a single nutrient, for instance calcium. They vary the dosages of the nutrient and then determine the benefits based on these dosages to determine the Minimum Daily Requirement (MDR), Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) and therapeutic dosages needed to produce results. The fallacy is that these results are only valid if one is using the same exact isolated nutrient source (sometimes synthetic) in the study. If one uses another source of calcium (e.g., bone meal, oyster shells, coral calcium) or perhaps a calcium supplement that contains Vitamin D and magnesium (complementary nutrients Nature dictated are needed to make calcium work in the body), the results might be totally different. New research shows that the absorption and utilization rate of isolated supplements is only 20-25% (the rest goes down the toilet but you still pay for it). Many supplements are tested in short-term studies (e.g., 6 months–1 year) and show great promise. So, everyone jumps on the bandwagon and must have this new great product. But what are the real results and long term effects?

When comparing the MDR, RDA or prescribed therapeutic dosages of supplements to whole foods, one must look at real results in terms of absorption and utilization in the body, not allopathic dosages. It's like comparing the benefits of apples to oranges. For example, if one takes a 1000 mg isolated calcium supplement and multiplies by the absorption rate of 25%, one utilizes only 250 mg of the supplemental calcium. However, whole food products have a 90-95% absorption rate because they contain all the complementary vitamins (i.e., Vitamin D), minerals (i.e., magnesium), amino acids, enzymes, etc. Nature dictated are needed to make calcium work. So, from a whole food product 95% X 350 mg, one will absorb 333 mg of the calcium from the whole food product. Since 333 mg absorption is better than 250 mg from the isolated supplement, a whole food product containing "only" 350 mg calcium is better than an isolated calcium supplement advertising 1000 mg.
