Lyme Disease is a relatively new disease caused by an organism from a tick bite (Ehrlichia genus). In flea1975, a group of mothers who lived in Lyme, Connecticut made researchers aware that their children all were diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. This unusual grouping of 'rheumatoid arthritis' eventually led researchers to the identification of the Ehrlichia organism's cause of the children's condition, which was called "Lyme Disease" in 1982. In 1953, the first ehrlichial pathogen of humans was identified in Japan. In the mid-1980s, human ehrlichiosis became recognized in the United States as caused by the Ehrlichia organism from a tick bite. Ehrlichia or canine ehrlichiosis had previously been associated with ticks bites on a dog. Ehrlichiosis can be caused by several organisms in the Ehrlichia canis, E. equi, E. platys, E. ewingii (and possibly others) family. The Ehrlichia organisms are called rickettsia, which on the evolutionary scale are between bacteria and viruses.
It really does not matter whether bacterium, rickettsia or viruses caused the illness, our holistic point of view is the same.
